El estudio de Foster + Partners ha planificado la nueva ciudad de Masdar (Abu Dhabi) persiguiendo el objetivo de convertirla en la primera ciudad «zero-carbon» y «zero-waste» del mundo, es decir: sin emisiones contaminantes y sin producción de residuos.
La ciudad estará ubicada en medio del desierto, como un «oasis» ecológico, y tendrá la forma de un cuadrado de 6 km de lado, similar a las antiguas ciudades amuralladas asirias. El proyecto, patrocinado por la Abu Dhabi´s Future Energy Company, estará alimentado por una planta de energía solar fotovoltaica, campos eólicos de aerogeneradores y campos de investigación y plantación (será una ciudad autosuficiente).
Además, el transporte público se resolverá con un sistema de tranvías, por lo que no habrá coches.
