very learnful, mr Agnese. In fact, on their website, still the phrase 'The project will (!, ed.) extend the top floor plate of the tower by grafting a high performance carbon Kevlar structure on it. The structure will be temporarily bolted to the slab without requiring any modification of the existing structure. It will (!, ed.) expand the usable floor area from 280 m2 to 580m2.'

So, it's clear who's, still, lying here.
I don't know how these people still could disrespect the simple fact of this plan NOT becoming reality. Respecting facts is a valuable thing.

Mr. Serero neglects to mention that in an e-mail exchange with an Architect magazine reporter about the "project" he made several statements confirming our inquiry of whether there was a competition and that Serero Architects' proposal would become a reality. I offer an edited version here:

Subject: RE: Eiffel Tower temporary platform extension

Stephani Miller,

We sent you this week a cdrom with all the pictures for the Eiffel project. You should receive it in the coming days.

Concerning your questions :

1. Was there a competition for the design of a platform extension?

There was an open call to architects to restructure the public spaces of the Eiffel Tower. The sociíˆtíˆ díExploitation de la tour Eiffel aimed to give better accessibility and better reception. Our project focused on the idea to increase the top floor surface area.

[snip]

3. When was the winning design chosen?

Our project has been selected with the condition to verify its technical feasibility. In the next 2 months, we will be able to get a definite answer

4. Who judged the design submissions?

I do not know exactly the name of the judges

[snip]

6. When will the platform extension be installed?

We are expected to install it in the spring 2009 for a period of one year.

[snip]

Regards,

David Serero

In addition, the e-mail we received from Louis Wapler (press@serero.com) contained this sentence: "The structure is expected to be assembled for the 120th anniversary of the tower construction." And a PDF attachment to the e-mail explaining the proposal says this: "In celebration of the 120th birthday of the tower, the Societé d'Exploitation de la Tour Eiffel launched an open call for architects to restructure the public reception and access areas of the tower."

The original article and follow-up may be found here: http://www.architectmagazine.com/industry-news.asp?articleID=674095&sectionID=1012

Our reporter contacted Serero's office once we learned that in fact no competition had occurred, but no response was ever received.

Architect magazine was remiss to run our story without confirmation from SETE, but that does not change what Mr. Serero wrote and what was contained in the e-mail and PDF sent to us by Wapler.

I would be happy to forward the e-mails and PDF to anyone who is interested.
